The purpose of this legacy project is to increase the cultural competency and diversity education of students participating in the Southern Leaders Coaching Program. We aim to create a unified campus at Georgia Southern University by helping students better understand who they are, their communities, and how the relationships have a large scale effect.

The first step toward change is awareness. The second step is acceptance.

Project Schedule

Pre-Module

Early August - Distribution of Surveys

During this time, a required survey will be sent out to students. This survey will determine the student's placement during ballroom discussion as it is based on their background.

Mid-Late August - Collection & Processing of Surveys

The surveys have now been collected and are to be processed by the assigned delegate e.g. Coaching Chair. Students will be given a table number based on the results of the survey.

Mid-Late September - Diversity & Inclusion Module

During this time, the students will have moved into the module and are acting out the event.

Below is the expected sequence for the module.

Module

Coaching groups will meet in the Russell Union Ballroom or Williams Center Multipurpose Room where they will be assigned a table number based on their survey results. Ideally, the tables will house students from various backgrounds. At the table, facilitation will completed by Southern Leaders Coaches using the created facilitation guide. Discussions will last about 20-30 minutes. Once discussions are completed, students and coaches will move to part 2 of the module.

Part 1 - Diversity & Privilege Discussion (Ballroom)

The groups will then walk to Sweetheart Circle together to conduct the Privilege Walk. Once they arrive, the assigned delegate (e.g. Southern Leaders Graduate Assistant) will facilitate a privilege walk. All students and all coaches will participate in the walk. There will be a facilitation guide for this as well. There will be a very brief discussion about everyone's standing before everyone moves back to the union.

Part 2 - Privilege Walk (Sweetheart)

Groups will return to their tables in the Russell Union Ballroom where coaches will again facilitate a final discussion regarding the entire module. Prior to the conclusion of the module, students will be informed of a post-survey regarding the module. This survey is required as it will help decipher any changes that may need to be made (if necessary) in program and/or module going forward.
